Short description
The artificial lagoons of Potosí are located in a stunning natural setting. They are considered a fundamental element of the colonial mining infrastructure. An additional attraction is their location on the foothills of the Kari-Kari mountain range, where high-mountain hiking becomes sublime. They cover an area of 25 km², at an average altitude of 4,624 meters above sea level. The construction of these lagoons took almost half a century and involved nearly 89,000 mitayos (indigenous people). They date back to 1576. Their waters, from the San Idelfonso and San Sebastián lagoons, created the banks of the mining mills. Walking along their walls is simply mystical and moving.
Program
A 5- to 6-hour trek through extraordinary peaks at 4,070 meters above sea level. A high-altitude climb offers spectacular views of the city, the Silver Colossus, and the Kari Kari Mountains. We arrive at San Sebastián Lagoon, admiring its Andean wildlife. Following a trail, we reach San Ildefonso Lagoon. A coca tea relieves altitude sickness, and we reach San Pablo Lagoon at 4,650 meters above sea level. We admire more colonial lagoons among its high peaks, which reach 4,857 meters above sea level. This unique natural setting, with snowfall in some months, is the perfect place to return to the city.
