LLAMA TREK 3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

Short description

In the area of the Jatun and Juchuy ayllu (large and small) west of the city of Potosí at the foot of the mountains of the Cordillera de los Frailes, with deep ravines formed by rivers that feed the Pilcomayo; there are desolate pre-Columbian roads where once the precious mineral was transported in llama trains to the Pacific. During these days we will appreciate the comings and goings of natives along with 60 or 70 llamas carrying salt adobes and others carrying products from the valley, as their ancestors did, regardless of the cold, the wind or the burning sun of the heights, crossing the Asanaques, and the plains of Vilichuco and Condorquiña. On this occasion the noble llama will be our expedition companion,

Day 1: Potosí – Chaquilla – Churata.

Welcome to the city of Potosi. Our staff will give you a brief briefing about the trek and recommendations for quickly adapting to the altitude. We travel in a friendly atmosphere to the Tata Phurcu waka. In the village of Chaquilla, our local guide and some natives await us. A mystical ancestral ceremony will invoke luck, health, and work for our expedition alongside the noble llama. We cross the Chaquilla plain, arriving at Churata. Camping is available nearby.

Day 2: Churata – Kelkata – Chimpaya.

Like the muleteers of centuries past, we carry our luggage on the llamas. This day’s hike becomes a bit strenuous, but we mitigate the stress with a cup of coca tea. We cross the San Juan River, taking time to observe its rock formations and hundreds of llamas grazing in its meadows, and then ascend through sandy areas to reach small lagoons. Campsite.

Day 3: Chimpaya – Visijsa.

Today we cross the Chimpaya plain, offering unique views of its high mountains, such as the waqa of Tata Phurco, 4,763 meters above sea level. We walk along a silent and winding stretch of the high plateau summit to reach Apacheta. We descend through Mikhani, slowly passing lonely ranches and indigenous architecture. We arrive at the small Visijsa Valley. The afternoon is free to take relaxing baths in its medicinal waters and recharge our batteries. A welcome ceremony and apthapi (traditional lunch) will conclude our adventure with the noble llama. At the end of the day, we will be transferred by exclusive vehicle to the city of Potosi.
